Generalized Partial Response Targets for Perpendicular Recording with Jitter Noise

چکیده
In this paper, we propose new generalized partial response (GPR) targets for perpendicular recording whose transition response is modeled as an error function, and compare their performance with the partial response (PR) targets both in the presence and in the absence of jitter noise. Regardless of any jitter noise amount, results indicate that the GPR targets outperform the PR targets, especially at high linear recording densities. We also determine that the dominant error sequence for this perpendicular recording is the same for all targets when jitter noise is low. The system performance can therefore be further improved by designing and using codes to avoid this dominant error sequence. Another signiÞcant point is the fact that the dominant error sequence of perpendicular recording is different from longitudinal recording, thus requiring design of different types of codes than the ones used for longitudinal recording. Finally, we show that the effective signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be equivalently used instead of the bit-error-rate (BER) as a measure to compare the performance of different targets. The Performance Comparison Between DC-Full and DC-Attenuation Partial- Response Targets in Perpendicular Magnetic Recording Channel
In this paper, we investigate the performance of perpendicular recording channel for dc-full and dcattenuation partial response targets under the environment of electronics noise and jitter noise. We compare the performance of partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML) and noise-predictive maximum–likelihood (NPML) detector for both types of targets. The NPML system is more suited for dc-attenu...
متن کاملAn MMSE Infinite Impulse Response Equalizer for Perpendicular Recording Channels with Jitter Noise
A finite impulse response (FIR) equalizer is practically employed in conjunction with the Viterbi detector for data detection process in magnetic recording channels. However, the FIR equalizer with a large number of taps is required at high density storage channels. It is well-known that an infinite impulse response (IIR) filter with a small number of taps can closely approximate such an FIR fi...

متن کاملCombatting Partial Erasure and Transition Jitter in Magnetic Recording
Practical recording channels deviate significantly from the oft-used model based on linearity and additive Gaussian noise. Among the well-known anomalies are partial erasure and transition jitter. In this paper, we first describe a precompensation technique to combat the partial erasure effect. It utilizes the unique property of the maximum transition run (MTR) code wherein all dibits are isola...

We investigate potential turbo equalization (TE) schemes for high density advanced magnetic recording systems. Compared to conventional TE schemes based on partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) detection, filtering based TE schemes are attractive due to their low computational complexity. In this paper, we focus on soft feedback equalization (SFE) [1]. We modify the generic SFE to deal wit...
